Marine insurer slams ‘criminal’ lack of African IUMI members

The International Union of Marine Insurance’s (IUMI’s) newly appointed ambassador for Africa has said that he will start to engage with African maritime nations immediately.
Speaking at the IUMI’s annual conference, Hilton Adams, head of Marine and Aviation for Munich Re, Africa, told that he would commence his task as soon as the event ends on Thursday.
“It is criminal that we only have four countries in Africa, which are members of IUMI,” he said. “At present we have South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco, we want to increase our membership.”
Adams said that he will head to Kenya and Ethiopia this week to discuss membership with their insurance associations, and hope that IUMI will also look to engage with west African nations, such as Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal in the longer term.
“The aim we have is to build our membership in the southeast and west of Africa,” he added.
IUMI president Dieter Berg added, “We have looked at how we can increase our footprint across the world. Africa contains many growing economies and we need to increase our representation within IUMI from the African countries. As we hold our annual conference in Africa for the first time, we felt it was the right time to take positive steps and appoint an ambassador to work on our behalf.”
